A sauna hat and a towel are not substitutes. The towel's job is under you: on the bench, absorbing sweat, keeping the wood clean. The hat's job is on your head, insulating your scalp and ears from the hottest air in the room. The confusion comes from the popular middle option: wrapping a towel around your head instead of wearing a hat. It feels sensible. It isn't.
Why the towel turban fails
- It stops insulating almost immediately. A towel is thin cotton. It absorbs your sweat and the room's steam within minutes, and wet fabric conducts heat to your scalp instead of blocking it. You end up with a hot, damp compress on your head. That's the opposite of the goal.
- It creates humidity at the scalp. Trapped damp heat right at the roots is worse for your hair than ambient dry heat. If you've noticed frizz and 'sauna straw' despite wrapping your hair, this is why.
- It doesn't stay put. Lean back on the top bench and the wrap slides. You spend the session adjusting it instead of relaxing.
- It leaves your ears out. Ears are vascular tissue and among the first parts of you to signal overheating. A wrap covers the crown and abandons the part that actually taps out first.
What a proper hat does differently
Dense wool felt is the inverse of a damp towel: it's a poor conductor of heat, it manages moisture without saturating, and it holds a stable shape over crown and ears. A hand-felted hat at ~6mm creates a genuinely cooler microclimate around your head. Your body gets the full session while your head stops being the reason you leave early. It also keeps direct heat off your hair, which is the main reason most people buy one. More on the mechanics in why wear a sauna hat.
What the towel is actually for
Sitting on. Every sauna expects it, most require it, and a good one matters more than people think: it needs to absorb through a full session without turning into a swamp, survive constant hot washes, and contain nothing synthetic, because polyester has no business in a 194°F room. That's the job The Sauna Towel was built for: 100% organic grown cotton, waffle-woven, with a sewn-in loop for drying between sessions.
The verdict
It was never hat versus towel. It's hat and towel, doing different jobs: towel on the bench, hat on your head. The only wrong answer is the towel on your head. That's one piece of kit doing two jobs badly.
